Curly Hair Care: The Do's, Don'ts, and the DunGud Secret for Perfect Curls

Curly hair isn't just texture. It's a conversation. A commitment. Sometimes a rebellion against every smoothing serum the world tried to sell you.

At Skull Candy Hairshop, we've spent years learning to speak curl: not straightening it, not apologising for it, not treating it like something that needs fixing. Just understanding what it needs.

What it doesn't. And how to make it look criminally good with minimal effort.

Because here's the thing: curls have their own language. Their own rules. And if you're fighting them instead of working with them, you're going to lose every single time.

Your Curl Pattern Isn't a Problem to Solve

Let's get specific. When we talk about curls, we're talking about a spectrum: not a binary.

2C waves: loose, S-shaped patterns that start at the roots. They've got body. They've got movement. They also have a habit of going flat at the crown if you look at them wrong.

3A curls: defined spirals, roughly the width of footpath chalk. These hold their shape well but need moisture: constantly, religiously, without apology.

3B curls: tighter curls, springy, voluminous. Think marker-width spirals. These are the curls that shrink when they dry and expand into glorious volume when treated right.

3C curls: tight corkscrews, pencil-width or smaller. High maintenance if you don't know what you're doing. Absolute magic when you do.

And just to be crystal clear — curl patterns run all the way up to 4C (coily). Our team at Skull Candy Hairshop specialises in textures up to 3C.

We see all of them at our St Kilda salon. None of them are better or worse. They're just different conversations. Different needs. Different strategies.

The Do's: What Your Curls Are Begging You to Try

Hydration. Then more hydration.

Curls are thirsty. Structurally, the shape of a curl makes it harder for natural oils to travel from root to tip. That means dryness is built into the system: unless you intervene.

Deep condition once a week minimum. Use a leave-in conditioner on soaking wet hair after every wash. Lock it in with a lightweight oil: jojoba, argan, nothing too heavy unless you're rocking 3C curls that can handle it.

Ditch the terry cloth. Pick up a microfibre towel.

Traditional towels rough up the hair cuticle. That means frizz. Breakage. Curls that look fuzzy instead of defined.

Microfibre towels: or even an old T-shirt: absorb water without creating friction. Scrunch your curls dry. Don't rub. Never rub.

Diffuse with intention, or air-dry with patience.

If you're blow-drying, use a diffuser attachment on low heat. Cup sections of your curls in the diffuser and lift towards the roots: don't blast them into submission.

Or skip the heat entirely. Air-drying takes longer, but it's gentler. Less frizz. More definition. We get it, not everyone has two hours to wait for their hair to dry. But if you do, use them.

Get regular trims from someone who knows how to cut curls.

This is non-negotiable. Curly hair doesn't grow in a straight line, and it doesn't get cut like straight hair. A proper curly haircut means cutting curl by curl, working with the shape, respecting the spring factor.

The Don'ts: Stop Doing This Immediately

Don't brush your curls dry.

Just don't. Use a wide-tooth comb or your fingers when your hair is soaking wet and coated in conditioner. That's it. That's the window.

Dry brushing breaks up curl clumps, creates frizz, and turns defined spirals into a vague cloud of chaos.

Don't use high heat. Ever.

Heat tools over 180°C will fry your curl pattern. If you absolutely must use heat, apply a heat protectant first and keep the temperature low. But honestly? Skip it. Your curls don't need it.

Don't use sulfates.

Sulfates strip moisture. Curly hair is already struggling to stay hydrated, why make it harder? Look for sulphate-free shampoos or cleansing conditioners. Your scalp will adjust. Your curls will thank you.

Don't skip the consultation.

Walking into a hair salon and asking for "just a trim" isn't enough. Talk to your stylist. Show them photos. Explain what's working and what's driving you insane.

We need to know: are you heat-styling? How often are you washing? What products are you using? What's your morning routine realistically look like?

We're not judging. We're troubleshooting. There's a difference.

The DunGud Secret: Products That Actually Understand Curls

Here's where we talk about DUNGÜD: because if you're in Melbourne and you haven't discovered this range yet, you're missing out.

DUNGÜD products are vegan, ethically sourced, gluten-free, and designed for real hair. Not Instagram hair. Not editorial hair. The hair you wake up with on a Tuesday.

  • Reset Detox Shampoo — a deep clean that eliminates oil and buildup using Peppermint Oil, Watercress, and White Nettle. Ultimate scalp refresh. Like you hit “restart” at the roots.

  • Force Quit Intensive Treatment / Co-Wash — the reboot button for hair on the brink. Hydrolysed Vegetable Protein and Panthenol for rich hydration and repair. Use it as a deep treatment — or as a co-wash when your curls need softness without the squeak.

  • Nirvana Treatment Primer & Second Day Re-styler — the antidote to bed hair. It detangles, protects from heat, and nourishes with Bamboo and Olive Squalene. Perfect for day-two curls when you want your shape back without a full wash day.

  • Salt of the Earth Beach Spray — undone, lived-in texture and volume powered by Australian Sea Salt and Marine Algae — without drying your hair out. Beachy, but not crispy.

We use DUNGÜD at Skull Candy Hairshop because it works. Not because it’s trendy. Not because the packaging looks good on a shelf — though it absolutely does.

And this is just a teaser. There are heaps more DUNGÜD heroes on our shelves at Skull Candy Hairshop — come in, have a sniff, and we’ll match you to your curls and your routine.

Curly Hair Maintenance Is a Practice, Not a Product

You can buy every recommended product. You can follow every rule. But if you're not consistent, your curls will stay unpredictable.

Curly hair maintenance is about rhythm. Wash day. Refresh day. Deep conditioning day. Trim day. It's a cycle, not a one-time fix.

At our salon, we teach you the routine that fits your life: not some idealised version of your life where you have 90 minutes every morning. We work with your actual schedule. Your actual skill level. Your actual commitment.

Because here's the truth: the best curly haircut won't save you if you're using the wrong products at home. And the best products won't save you if your cut is fighting your natural pattern.

It's a system. We help you build it.

Come as You Are. Leave With Curls That Actually Work.

We're not promising miracles. We're not selling you a 12-step routine you'll abandon by next month.

We're offering expertise. Products that don't lie. Cuts that respect your curl pattern instead of trying to tame it. And a space where curly hair isn't treated like a problem to solve: it's a texture to celebrate.

Book a consultation. Bring your questions. Bring your frustrations. Bring your reference photos of curls you love and curls you've tried to achieve and failed.

We'll figure it out together. Your hair. Your routine. Your version of perfect.
